Last minute Romantic getaway Oregon style

Saturday, July 17, 2010 by Heather Tyreman
View from the Chief Josph Mountain Room of the Wallowa Mountains near Wallowa Lake in Eastern OregonLooking for a last minute romantic getaway Oregon style for a few days?  Come to Joseph Oregon!  We've had a cancellation here at the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast and the Chief Joseph Mountain Room is now available for Sunday through Tuesday nights this week (July 18-20, 2010).   Of our three guest rooms and the Mirror Lake Suite, I'm inclined to say that views of the Wallowa Mountains from this room are lovely.  Especially from bed over a cup of early morning Mulligan's organic coffee.

As a bonus, there's still some snow on the Wallowa Mountains here in late July this year, making them all the more attractive!

This is also the week leading into Chief Joseph Days Rodeo.  If you'd like to see all of Joseph's shops and boutiques and restaurants at their height of summer, getting ready for rodeo, then this is the time for you.  And you'll be gone before the big crowds start on Wednesday afternoon!

Give us a call toll-free at 866-520-9769 and Bill or I would be happy to book your reservation.  We'll even throw in a bottle of champagne for your spur-of-the-moment stay.  See you for your romantic getaway Oregon style!

Adding Arrowhead Chocolates to your Romantic Getaway Oregon style

Wednesday, April 21, 2010 by Heather Tyreman
We've something new to offer to your romantic getaway Oregon style--Arrowhead Chocolates.   Don't try looking for their website or a Facebook page just yet (they don't have either), but the chocolates are extraordinary.

Arrowhead Chocolates at your romantic getaway Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast in Joseph OregonErica's making artisinal truffles and other delectables up on Alder Slope, the high ground between Enterprise and Joseph Oregon.  Dark chocolate?  Milk chocolate?  She's got both and developing new flavors regularly.  Dipped caramel or ginger pieces, hazelnut clusters, mocha truffles. . .the list is ever growing.

Just recently we hosted guests at the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast that requested specialty chocolates.  He'd been fishing all day.  He wanted to give his wife really, really good milk chocolates as part of his thank you.  At prices over $20/pound these chocolates aren't inexpensive, but she was very appreciative.

If you're planning your romantic getaway Oregon style and want to add a little extra, talk to us about Arrowhead Chocolates.  We'll be happy to have them in your guest room and awaiting your check in.  And Erica will thank you too!

Another Romantic Getaway Oregon Style

Thursday, March 11, 2010 by Heather Tyreman
The Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast in Joseph Oregon is the perfect location for your romantic getaway Oregon styleWe just love setting the scene for couples to reconnect.  These days with so much input coming from all directions, it's nice to step away with the one you love and just be yourselves.

Another romantic getaway Oregon style recently occurred here at our Joseph bed and breakfast.   Our guests this time live only about two hours away, so a 2-day trip to Joseph Oregon was not a major investment of time and money, nor did they endure hours upon hours in the car to arrive at a picture perfect gorgeous place--Wallowa County with the Wallowa Mountains as the scenic backdrop.

Here's what they wrote in the Mirror Lake Suite's room journal:

"Bill & Heather,
Thank you so much for giving us probably the most relaxing and enjoyable weekend we have had in a very long time.  Not only did you take care of all our needs, you treated us like extended family!  The room was even more wonderful than we expected and every time we entered the bathroom it was like a little adventure.  I am sure we will be back in the future."

I guess they're referring to the steam shower, or maybe the pipeless jetted tub, or perhaps even the Neorest toilet/bidet with its remote control.  Who knows?  Regardless, they enjoyed their stay here with us and we certainly enjoyed facilitating their together time.

If you're thinking about a reconnecting weekend or stealing a couple of days midweek from your busy schedule, give us a call toll-free at 866-520-9769 and we can help figure out which of our guestrooms would be best for you.  We're also happy to make dinner reservations, order flowers, chill a bottle of cider or champagne, or whatever else you'd like to set the scene for a relaxing romantic getaway Oregon style!

Signs of Spring in Joseph Oregon and Wallowa County: Calderas Restaurant Announces 2010 Hours

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 by Heather Tyreman
Calderas in Joseph Oregon is one of our favorite places to eat. We send many of our bed and breakfast guests to Calderas for dinner because we know they will come back satisfied. We know it's getting on to Spring in Wallowa County when some of the restaurants come out of their winter hibernation and announce their new operating hours.  Calderas, one of our favorite Joseph Oregon restaurants, will open starting March 18, 2010.

(Calderas was open for a packed house on Valentine's Day.  All four couples staying at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast on February 14th enjoyed a romantic getaway Oregon style dinner at Calderas.  Yum!)

Nancy Lincoln informed us that Calderas will be open:
  • March 18th to May 18th, Thursday through Saturday, 10 am to 9 pm
  • May 19th to September 13th, Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 10 pm
And Calderas is more than just fantastic food.  Nancy and her son are both glass artists.  You'll find their pieces for sale at Calderas, along with antiques, jewelry and other gifts.  Dinner this year features tapas (small plates) along with classic cocktails, desserts, wine and expresso.  And during the day you'll find sweets and savory pastries.

When you're wandering the Internet looking for a Wallowa Lake hotel or Joseph Oregon hotels (as some of our guests tell us they use these terms when they start their searches), hopefully you'll bump into other aspects of Joseph Oregon like Calderas and the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast!

Where to celebrate an anniversary? How about our romantic getaway Oregon style!

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 by Heather Tyreman
A decanter of sherry is always available to our of-age guests at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast in Joseph Oregon. Image by Marcus Berg of Unique Angles Photography in Keizer OregonLooking for where to celebrate an anniversary in Oregon?  Our little Eastern Oregon bed and breakfast seems to be a popular choice.  This last weekend alone we hosted two couples celebrating their anniversaries.  Here's what they had to say (as quoted from the room journal):

"We had a most memorable and delightful anniversary celebration in this wonderful suite.  A truly pampering and romantic time. . ." B&L

"We join the enthusiastic ranks of Anniversary-observers who have enjoyed this elegant suite.  Thanks. . ."  L&C

Both couples planned their romantic getaway Oregon style to our little town in Eastern Oregon.  Both couples live within a 2-hour drive of Joseph Oregon, making our location an easy drive.  And both couples had plenty of time to explore the town before heading home.

Even if you don't opt to have a nice bottle of sparkling wine from Argyle Winery awaiting you in your guest room, or even if you don't ask us to order in a bouquet of flowers for your sweetie, chances are good you'll have a very nice stay for your anniversary celebration.  But if you'd like to opt for sparkling wine (or cider) and flowers, we'll be happy to take care of the details!

Only one room left for Valentine's Day at our Eastern Oregon lodging!

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 by Heather Tyreman
My goodness!  Only one room left for Valentine's Day at our Eastern Oregon lodging!  If you're planning a romantic getaway Oregon style to Joseph Oregon, our Sawtooth Mountain Room is still available for Valentine's Day and President's Day Weekend 2010.

Sawtooth Mountain Room at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast in Joseph OregonHere's a little about the Sawtooth Mountain Room at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast.

This guest room lodging accommodations at any fine hotel.   Highlights include:
  • Queen-sized bed with Simmons Beautyrest mattress, topped with a Sensus latex dense foam topper (very comfortable!), fine linens, down comforter and lots of pillows.
  • West-facing views of the Wallowa Mountains.  The mountains are a little farther away so there's more of a sweeping panoramic view looking out these windows.
  • Attached ensuite bathroom, complete with deeper style soaking tub and bidet.  Oversized microfiber bathrobes and slippers.  A two-sided, wall-mounted adjustable lighted makeup mirror (our guests love this).  North-facing window over the Wallowa Valley

  • Art Nouveau period artwork and decor.  My favorite item is the Ecole Nancy parlor stove we brought home from France that now serves as a tabletop.
  • Warm burnt orange walls adorned with hand-painted Arts & Crafts period stencils painted by decorative art professional Amy Miller.
  • Full bed and breakfast service including sherry upon arrival, chilled water, restaurant menus (and our recommendations), wine cellar selections, concierge services, activity planning, maps and reservations.

Still no television or fitness center on premises at the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast.  But with views like these and the Wallowa Mountains at your doorstep, who needs TV or a treadmill?

Ferguson Ridge Ski area website at SkiFergi.com

Bill & I saw the original 16mm version of "Crossing the Wallowas" a couple of years ago at the Frostbite Film Festival--what a trip!  Even if you're not a backcountry ski enthusiast, you'll appreciate the efforts these men went through to make this film.  Cameras were a lot heavier in the 1950s!

Currently the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast is completely open for Friday night, January 22nd.  Plan a quick romantic getaway Oregon style to Joseph and include an evening of great food, dancing and a film.  Top it off with a cozy bed and breakfast the next morning before you start your own winter adventures!

Planning ahead for Valentine's Day 2010

Tuesday, December 8, 2009 by Heather Tyreman
Are you planning ahead for Valentine's Day 2010?  If so, you might already have noticed that Valentine's Day falls on Sunday of President's Day Weekend 2010.  That means a 3-day weekend for folks that get the federal holiday!

How about a romantic getaway Oregon style to a luscious little Joseph Oregon bed and breakfast?  Currently, two of our three guestrooms AND the Mirror Lake Suite are available (one lucky couple's already snagged one of our guestrooms).

Joseph Oregon isn't that far of a drive, especially for a 3-day weekend.  We can promise you snow (in town and in the mountains), a cozy place to come home to after a day of snowshoeing and cross country skiing, or a very comfortable place to nap for the bed slugs.  Champagne is available from our cellar.  We can order in flowers for you if you like.  Just let us know!

Innkeepers searching for Minnie & Mickey

Tuesday, December 1, 2009 by Inside the Bronze Antler
grandkids getting ready for Disneyworld! For a short time in December, the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast staff will become innkeepers searching for Minnie & Mickey.  We're going to Orlando for a family reunion and get a dose of grandkids like the two pictured here.

Madigan's staying home, but she not very fond of cooking breakfast for guests, so we decided to give her some time off too.  We just don't think she'd do complete justice to our Joseph Oregon bed and breakfast.  Tuna in the morning can be difficult to stomach!

If you're planning your romantic getaway Oregon style to the far reaches of northeastern Oregon, hold that thought until the week between Christmas and New Years!

Mutiny Brewing Company update

Sunday, November 29, 2009 by Heather Tyreman
Mutiny Brewing Company in Joseph OregonTime for another Mutiny Brewing Company update.   Bill & I ate dinner at Mutiny Brewing Company last night.  Our server, John, was right on top of the entire dining room and hustling to keep all the tables taken care of.

The special?  Pad Thai with either shrimp or chicken.  Delicious.  We had one of each.  If you have access to Facebook, Mutiny Brewing Company has a fan page on Facebook where they post the daily specials.  Worth the look--if only I'd seen the catfish with con cakes and collards!  You just can't find food like this in the local region outside of Joseph Oregon.

Of course we had to ask about the status of Kari's beer brewing.  The target date now seems to be December 19, 2009.  Mutiny Brewing's had some fits and starts getting the beer making off the ground--needing parts for equipment, scheduling inspectors into this far corner of Eastern Oregon--but we've got our fingers crossed for before the end of the year!

If you're thinking about a quick little romantic getaway Oregon style, then our Joseph Oregon bed and breakfast, along with a casual dinner at Mutiny Brewing Company here in Joseph Oregon, might be just the thing.  And check the specials on their page on Facebook!

Hat Point Lookout: Not (very) far from our Hells Canyon lodging!

Sunday, October 25, 2009 by Heather Tyreman
Bill taking in the view of Hells Canyon from the Hat Point Lookout near Joseph OregonThe Hat Point Lookout is not very far from our Hells Canyon lodging.  The problem with getting to Hat Point, just like most places in Hells Canyon, is not the distance (only 52 miles), but the driving time (about 2 hours).

But it's worth the effort to get there!

The Hat Point Road will close during the winter because of snow, but it often stays open well into November.  It usually opens all the way to the lookout tower by mid or late June.

If you're thinking about an autumn romantic getaway Oregon style, then a trip including Hat Point Lookout could be a memorable event.  You'll probably be the only ones there at the tower and can enjoy the scenery all to yourselves.

But then you'll need to plan another trip in the spring or summer to see the amazing wildflower display!

Give us a call at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast in Joseph Oregon and ask about the road to Hat Point.  If we don't know for sure if it's open or closed, we'll be happy to "check our sources" and find out for you!

A restorative Eastern Oregon Vacation

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 by Heather Tyreman
Relaxing with books in the Mirror Lake Suite on an Eastern Oregon vacation. Photo by Unique Angles Photography, Keizer, ORWe were recently hosts to a very busy Western Oregon professional couple on the start of their week-long Eastern Oregon vacation.  Sadly to say, I think we've thoroughly spoiled them--I hope the rest of their vacation is as restful and restorative as the days and nights they spent here at our bed and breakfast.

Their comments after a few nights in the Mirror Lake Suite:

"Thank you for making our stay so memorable.  You are both such gracious hosts.  The food was fabulous, and the room is beyond words.  This trip was just what we needed--a perfect place to relax and unwind.  We loved all the nice little touches you've done with the suite.  You really thought of everything.  We will definitely be back sometime to sleep in this wonderfully comfortable bed and to have some more of your heavenly brownies!

If you're looking for your own restorative Eastern Oregon vacation, or just a quick romantic getaway Oregon style, give us a call toll-free at 866-520-9769 and we'll be happy to help you plan your Eastern Oregon escape.

Hiking in the Eagle Cap Wilderness: Maxwell Lake

Sunday, August 30, 2009 by Heather Tyreman

Bill and I slipped out again for another quick hike in the Eagle Cap Wilderness--this time to Maxwell Lake.  Maxwell Lake is located about 4 miles from the trailhead near the end of the Upper Lostine River Road.  The trailhead is accessible throughout the summer and into the fall and is about one hour's drive from our Joseph Oregon bed and breakfast.

The lake itself is a 4 mile hike from the trailhead, making it one of the more accessible of the high lakes in the Eagle Cap Wilderness.  The first three miles of trail are four long, slow switchbacks with occasional views of Eagle Cap Peak.  The last mile is the toughest--0.7 mile of creekbed to hike up, a small pass, followed by 0.3 mile of slow descent into the basin holding Maxwell Lake.

Maxwell Lake in the Eagle Cap Wilderness of Northeastern Oregon

But, the effort is well worth it--even for a couple of less-than-well-conditioned innkeepers.  Take a look at the view!

Not long after we finished our lunch another couple showed up with fishing gear.  There are plenty of hungry trout in this crystal clear lake looking for something to eat.

If you're looking for an outdoorsy, physical romantic getaway Oregon style, then maybe the hike to Maxwell Lake's for you.

After lunch we spread out our blanket for a little snooze.  Nothing like sharing a few moments in the outdoors with the one you love!

We keep a variety of hiking guides and maps here at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast.  If you like, we'll help steer you to outdoor adventures of varying degrees of difficulty.  Just bring along your hiking boots and outdoor clothes and we'll help you plan the rest!

Things to do near Joseph Oregon: Swim in the Blue Hole!

Saturday, August 22, 2009 by Heather Tyreman
Blue Hole in the Upper Imnaha River near Joseph OregonWondering about what things to do near Joseph Oregon?  How about swim in the Blue Hole of the Upper Imnaha River?  Bill & I took a midday off with visiting friends to drive out to the Indian Crossing trailhead on the Upper Imnaha River.  It was a 90-degree day and a dip in the Blue Hole sounded like a good idea.

The Indian Crossing trailhead is about an hour's drive from Joseph Oregon on the Wallowa Mountain Loop Road portion of the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway.   From the Indian Crossing trailhead it's about 2 miles along a very flat trail, winding through brush, forest and open areas.  The Upper Imnaha River is visible for most of the hike and very beautiful.

As for the Blue Hole, it's a wider, deeper area in the river just perfect for swimming.  That is, if water at 58 to 60 degrees doesn't bother you!  After a minute or so of wading, the water's perfect for a quick swim.  It's a great place to cool off at the beginning, middle or end of a hike along the Upper Imnaha River.

If you're looking for a romantic getaway Oregon style, then a hike in the Wallowas is a good opportunity for some "twosomeness" without much (if any) interruption.  Not many hikers out here.  And the Blue Hole is often deserted, especially midweek!

Guest comments from a B&B "virgin"

Sunday, June 21, 2009 by Heather Tyreman

Ferguson Ridge Room at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast Joseph Oregon lodgingSometimes we have a guest that has never stayed at a bed and breakfast before--we call that guest a "B&B virgin" for short.   Often, it's the husband who is reluctant to stay at a bed and breakfast.  His major concerns:

"The bathroom's down the hall and I have to share it with people I don't know."

"I have to talk at breakfast."

"There's too much lace and there are dolls or teddybears everywhere."

At the Bronze Antler Bed & Breakfast, each one of our rooms has its own attached, private bath.  There's never going down the hall to the bathroom and certainly no sharing!

Breakfast is served starting as early as 7:30 a.m. and as late as 9:00 a.m., so if you don't want to talk to anyone, you can choose a time convenient for you.

Lace?  We don't have any.  And no dolls or teddybears either (unless you count the rubber ducky in the bathtub).  In fact, we call jokingly ourselves a "no frills B&B" just for that reason.

Here's a recent guest comment from the wife of a former B&B virgin:

My husband's first B&B experience was indeed memorable!  He will not have a better guide to judge from.  The "cookie" was wonderful.  Such a smart couple you are.  Heather, you do understand you are THE COOKIE.  We so enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere, food, visit and thoughtful 'extras.'  Good luck and God Bless-- J&G, Idaho

It's so much fun to introduce guests to the bed and breakfast experience.  If you're looking for a romantic getaway Oregon style or just a nice place to stay, a bed and breakfast can be a great alternative to Joseph Oregon hotels or a Wallowa Lake hotel.

Give us a call toll-free at 866-520-9769, or visit our website and learn more about what a bed and breakfast experience can be.

27th Annual Wallowa Valley Festival of Arts: Always the First Weekend of June

Thursday, June 4, 2009 by Heather Tyreman

Joseph Oregon Art Festival Poster courtesy of Wallowa Valley Festival of Arts

The 27th Annual Wallowa Valley Festival of Arts opens on Friday of the first weekend in June.  This year, that's tomorrow, June 5.  Bill & I've already been busy with the Art Festival.  Yesterday over 340 individual pieces of juried art were accepted for the show.  Last night the judging took place (but I cannot divulge the results before the show opens).

The show runs through Sunday at 2 pm.  There's a sold-out Opening Night Reception on Friday (waiting list for tickets), a Quick Draw on Saturday night, and the show is free and open from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon.  Artists demonstrations, music, a silent auction with 66 pieces of art--it's a great show!

Due to a recent cancellation, the Chief Joseph Mountain Room is now open for Friday and Saturday nights here at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast.  If you're interested, call us toll-free at 866-520-9769 since we're too close to use the booking software on our website.  It's a quick romantic getaway Oregon style for our guests in a one-tank-of-gas driving range. . .

With so much going on getting ready for the show we hardly have time to blog this week--but thought this particular announcement important.  It's going to be a fantastic show this year!
