One of our favorite hikes near our Eastern Oregon lodging is about a 10 minute drive away to the Hurricane Creek trailhead. The Hurricane Creek Trail goes up the Hurwal Divide--the low ground "behind" Chief Joseph Mountain. This hike combines open meadows with forested areas, a crossing over Falls Creek, and plenty of opportunities for viewing and listening to Hurricane Creek. Snowy white mountain goats were introduced into this area in the 1950s. With any luck, you might see one on the craggy peaks.
At the three-mile mark, the trail crosses Slick Rock Creek. This is a spot, we're told, where Elderhostel groups would hike to for lunch when out with a local naturalist. My friend Christine & I were up there in October and took a photo of the little waterfall on Slick Rock Creek before it joins Hurricane Creek.
Although there's a little bit of snow on the ground, this is still a nice hiking trail. And once we have significant snowfall, it'll be great for a snowshoeing adventure too.
We keep plenty of maps and Wallowa Mountain hiking guides here at the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast. Give us an idea of how long and how strenuous you'd like to hike and I think we'll find just the one for you!
