You've probably already read the post about our trip to the Lange Estate Winery and Vineyards outside of Dundee, Oregon. We purchased two lovely Pinot Noirs and a reserve Pinot Gris for the Bronze Antler Bed and Breakfast wine cellar.
Our next stop was Sokol Blosser Winery also located just outside of Dundee. Our hosts at the Black Walnut Inn had suggested Sokol Blosser as a winery producing fine dessert wine. They weren't kidding.
The 2006 White Reisling Dessert Wine is remiscent of the Eiswein (ice wine) we savored while living in Germany. Pure, sun-filled honey in every sip. This one's a keeper! We came away with half a case--not many, but expensive dessert wine will most likely not appeal to the majority of our guests and will hold well in the cellar at our Joseph bed and breakfast.
Sokol Blosser Winery also produces what we'd call a "party wine"--an easy to enjoy, inexpensive, non-vintage red wine called Meditrina. On the winery's website, this wine is recommended for "pulled pork sandwiches, charbroiled chicken with rosemary mashed potatoes, or enjoy by itself." For our Joseph bed and breakfast guests, we recommend the wine for sitting on our front porch with friends. (This wine also has its own funky little website worth visiting.)
Overall, we were very impressed with the Sokol Blosser Winery. It's a second generation, family-owned business with a heavy emphasis on sustainability. Susan Sokol Blosser, one of the original founders, reflected on what life was like in the early days of Dundee, Oregon, to Oregon Stories. Funny, the story sounds a little bit like Joseph Oregon (less the hazelnuts). Just replace the agriculture with the artistic bronzes.
We know this is a winery we will visit again.
In total: one half case of the 2006 White Riesling Dessert Wine and one case of the Meditrina. Still more Dundee Hills wineries to visit. . .
