It's the time of year when we start getting the question, "Is the road open between Joseph Oregon and Halfway Oregon?" This road--Forest Road 39--usually closes about this time of year and won't open again until the spring when the snow finally melts. On the map below, it's that little section of yellow-gold colored road. You can get a better view by clicking here.
As of today, the answer is still "yes," but how long that'll be true is a good guess. We've got two good sources of information. The official one is the USDA Forest Service Wallowa-Whitman National Forest Visitor Center in Enterprise. The phone number is (541) 426-4978 and they're open Mondays through Fridays.
The unofficial source is the Imnaha Store and Tavern located about 26 miles away from Joseph Oregon in the little hamlet of Imnaha. If you give them at call at (541) 577-3111 most any day, they'll either know or give you an opinion.
At any rate, I would seriously consider 4-wheel drive with snow tires mounted or at least carry chains (and know how to use them). Forest Road 39 is pretty remote and there are lots of places with no cell phone coverage. But it sure is pretty!
